A one-door BMW microcar shows up at a Texas cruise-in and instantly steals the whole parking lot. We’re live from the Tailpipes and Tacos Cruise-In in Katy, and we sit down with the owner of a 1959 BMW Isetta to unpack why this tiny, strange-looking classic is actually a rolling masterclass in packaging and creative engineering. From the front-opening body to the steering wheel mounted on the door, the Isetta is proof that great design is not always about speed.

We also zoom out into the real life of a collector who keeps an eclectic mix of classics and vintage trucks drivable, then share the kind of story every car person understands: tracking down the exact Porsche 911 you ordered new, sold after your wedding, and finally bought back years later for a full factory-fresh restoration. It’s nostalgia, research, and commitment all in one garage.

Then we flip to modern practicality with our 2026 Kia Carnival review, focusing on why this hybrid minivan that looks more like an SUV is winning people over. We talk design, interior space, captain’s chairs, fold-flat third-row utility, the 1.6L turbo hybrid powertrain with 242 horsepower, real-world fuel economy, pricing, and how it stacks up against Pacifica, Odyssey, and Sienna. If you like car culture stories plus clear buying guidance, this one hits both.

Live From Tailpipes And Tacos

Don Armstrong

It is the award one again with our talk show today coming to you from the Easter edition of the Tailpipes and Tacos Cruise In at the Olympia Tortilla Tex Max in Katy. Just ahead, Judd Holt talking about his Zeta that is here at the show. It's also the poster child for this cruise in this week, and uh it's a perfect fit. Uh later, Jeff has the motor minute. I'll review the new 2026 Kia Carnival in this segment of the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show. Howdy, along with Mike out of this world, Mars, we always need more Jeff Zeken. We have Chief Engineer David Ainsley with us today. My name is Thanks so much for joining us today. In the remote studio setting, we have here at the Loopy and Katie. Judd Holt is a good question.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I do need to make one correction. It's Peter. Judd, I'm sorry, that is the handsome one.

Don Armstrong

I'm sorry, I thought that I wasn't going to say anything. So um I'm sorry, I didn't know.

SPEAKER_00

That's okay.

Don Armstrong

You know, I see you guys probably once every five, ten years. Yeah. Sorry. Yeah. And in his age, five or ten years is a lifetime.

SPEAKER_00

This is probably the last one, right?

Don Armstrong

Yeah. I got I got one foot in the grave right now. Oh, look, he's got his father's sense of humor. That's great. Stay the rest of the grave.

Jeff Dziekan

Sit right there.

Don Armstrong

That was good. It was great. It was good. Well, it doesn't make any difference who it is. The car is true. This is not about you, it's about the car. That's right.

Jeff Dziekan

So tell me, Larry.

Don Armstrong

You you haven't had this much ribbing in quite some time. And I'm sorry. Yeah. I started it and I woke up.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

Don Armstrong

Sorry. So um is this one of many cars in your collection? Uh it is, yes. Because we haven't talked about the other cars in your collection. Did were you Don't you? Are you the brother that's because this is the best one? Is it? Yeah. There you go. And so what happens when you press the accelerator to the floor in that one?

SPEAKER_00

Uh I mean it's, you know, the neighbors are like, hey, take it easy. So kids apply. Yeah, come on, man.

Meeting The BMW Isetta Owner

Don Armstrong

So do we have do we have a picture of uh the It's on the screen? Well, partially. It's in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. Oh, okay. And it is an IZA. It is. Who who originally built the IZA? Was it BMW? That's what it's badged as.

SPEAKER_00

So I hope so. I can found that.

Don Armstrong

You know, I never knew that because to me it was always an IZA. Got it. BMW? Because you think of BMW, you think of a high performance German car, right? Yeah. Or a German car.

SPEAKER_00

What do you mean, think of? We're staring at the time.

Don Armstrong

Well, you know, well, it depends on your definition of that, because this is a car where the entire front end opens up. Doesn't have doors. That's the door, the door, the one and only door.

SPEAKER_00

The one and only door.

Don Armstrong

Yes, I have a picture of uh my daughter in one of those. Uh she came to visit, and uh somebody was selling one at the Meekham auction here in town. The door was open. I said, get in, let me take a picture. And she says, Dad, I can't believe this is a real car. Oh yeah. Um, I remember that my first vision of one. I'm not going to tell you what year it was, but it was a long time ago. And I'm going, that's really weird, but I kind of like it. There's something, what is what is attractive about that car to a car guy? Because it shouldn't be. It shouldn't be attractive because it's a non-traditional anything.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's definitely non-traditional. Uh I I think it's like it's a very sophisticated moped.

SPEAKER_04

Well, I I think it's the the wicker basket on the back for a picnic. Well, it is and it is balanced. That is balance picnics.

Don Armstrong

Well, I don't know, but let's but let's get back to the car itself because the steering wheel is actually mounted to the door.

SPEAKER_00

To the door, it folds away.

Don Armstrong

Yeah, and so an engineer designed a yoke kind of system. So when you shut the door, all of that all lines up with the steering wheel once the door is shut. Right.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, genius. There's definitely a lot of engineering that went into it. Yeah, to make that happen.

One-Cylinder Power And Real-World Speed

Don Armstrong

And it is a rear engine and well rear side. Rear side. Um what kind of a motor has it got in it? Four-cylinder?

SPEAKER_00

Uh no. One cylinder. A one-cylinder. It's called a bing. It's a one-cylinder, and I'm assuming the name came from the sound it makes. That's right. It does make that weird sound. Yeah, it's just uh just a little one-cylinder.

Don Armstrong

So it's not much bigger than a Briggs and Stratton lawnmower motor.

SPEAKER_00

Not that, but they those probably have more horsepower.

Don Armstrong

Really? Um, do you know how much horsepower? What was it advertised for?

SPEAKER_00

I don't think it's a full horse. I think it's maybe more in the donkey class.

SPEAKER_04

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

So he can really haul donkey. I've got to say there you go.

Don Armstrong

Yeah. It's a real jackass of a car, I'm telling you. I I like it. So what possessed you to buy it? Uh just to pick up chicks.

Jeff Dziekan

The ones at the grocery, the ones at the farm to market place.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, anywhere, really look at it. I mean, sleek lines, you know, aerodynamic, at least if it's in the middle.

SPEAKER_03

You can just swing it open and say, hey, baby.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean, it's just, you know, they have to sit right next to you.

Don Armstrong

I would imagine that anywhere anywhere that you went, anywhere that you went, people go, Wow, that's a really cool car. It is.

SPEAKER_00

It's an eye catcher, and it's all ages, obviously, because of its age, but uh, yeah, and it's you know, it's still unique.

Don Armstrong

Yeah. So uh we have it on our website and we have it on our Facebook page. It's the poster uh of this particular show. The event, yeah. And um it it it's just fantastic. Uh and uh the wicker basket on the back is an ad. Did they actually make a real rack for for like a luggage? Because it has no trunk.

SPEAKER_00

That is, it has no trunk, just the just the rear trail.

Don Armstrong

Because remember, you know, us Corvette guys, somebody somebody somewhere along the engineering department like a Chevrolet put a rug luggage rack on a Corvette. No, no, no. But I can't tell you how many I've seen. And when you see them, they're rare.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

Don Armstrong

And most of the people have taken them off if it ever had.

Jeff Dziekan

I think behind us, there might be a one. There's a couple of vets behind us, but so do you have any of those?

An Eclectic Classic Car Collection

Don Armstrong

The Corvettes? No. No. What what other cars do you have in your collection?

SPEAKER_00

Uh it's an eclectic mix. Um I've got some some classics. Uh I've got a uh you've seen the 52 Chev. Yes. The five window. It's got uh I've got a 67 uh Mustang.

Jeff Dziekan

Nice.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I have a 77 Bronco.

Jeff Dziekan

Wonderful. Wow.

SPEAKER_00

A 76 FJ, Toyota FJ. Okay.

Jeff Dziekan

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I have uh you drive them. I was gonna ask, yeah. I mean I drive them, they're all drivable. They're all you know, you know, practically you know, in in as new condition, um, but I don't drive them all very often. Right. So yeah. 72 uh Chevy pickup, uh 85 laser, uh I have a 52 uh VW transporter too.

SPEAKER_05

Nice. The pickup I like your taste.

SPEAKER_00

I like your taste. Yeah, but it's it's things that you know are all done correctly.

Don Armstrong

You have a favorite today.

Rebuying And Restoring A 2001 911

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I it it it changes. Um I was just thinking about that. Uh I just restored, I'll tell you an interesting story, is I I I found about three years ago the original 911 Porsche. It's a 2001 that I had bought, ordered it from the factory, took nine months to build back then. Uh took delivery of it about two weeks before I got married. And uh sold it probably a year and a half after I got it. I wanted a convertible, uh, but came across it on an online auction three years ago. So I went, oh that's just like when I had, and I started doing a little bit of research. It turns out it was. Where was it? Yeah, it was in the Midwest, uh in in like Idaho, and it only has 37,000 miles on it.

SPEAKER_05

Wow.

SPEAKER_00

Right? And so I'm thinking, okay, and they're claiming it's practically new. And so my wife, uh, we we actually drove away from our wedding in it. And so there's pictures uh from our wedding of us in her wedding dress getting in a car. So of course then I had her budget uh to buy the car. So I bought it in Oxford and I recently uh I sent it off to Chicago to a specialist group up there and had the entire completely redone back to uh factories new. Yeah. With with still it's only 37,000 miles. So that's been my and I just got it back uh last fall.

SPEAKER_05

So what was the period of time away from our?

SPEAKER_00

Uh so it was I bought it in 2001 and just bought it back in 2023. Wow. So and there was only two years, yeah. Yeah, there was only uh two other owners between me and uh and the original title.

Don Armstrong

Other people like you saw what you saw in it originally and then wanted to keep it that way.

SPEAKER_00

I guess. Well it turns out they didn't take that good care of it, but uh maybe. But they didn't they didn't modify it, they drove it. They they drove it. They drove it, and I think there was some maybe some body work that had been done to it. But uh but it's okay. It's not a car on everyone.

Don Armstrong

So did you ever see Greg Enders Black Corvette?

SPEAKER_00

Uh probably.

Don Armstrong

Yeah. Um back in 2016, 17. It had 16,000 miles on it, and now it's got 36,000 miles on it. Yeah. And um it's it's immaculate. The paint's been massaged on it, it's all original, but it's been massaged on it a lot. And so um it's it's my baby. Yeah. It's kind of what you're talking about, I think, kind of thing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was just uh, you know, it was an interesting just to find it and have it be in you know one piece and not have a hundred and fifty thousand.

SPEAKER_03

It's got a settle value with you and your wife. That that makes the world a lot better.

Don Armstrong

Now, do you go to the uh Houston Mico auction? I do. It's coming up. Do you uh you buy things there?

SPEAKER_00

I I have, I've I've bought quite a few things there, but it's you know, I certainly don't mind skipping it as far as buying something. It has to be something right, being hot right. So I bid on stuff and I'm happy.

Jeff Dziekan

But are you currently looking for something new to add or no? Or are you always in that frame?

SPEAKER_00

There no, I uh no, no, but I mean if there's something comes up and it's like I'll kick myself. That's stay inside.

unknown

Of course he's always looking for.

SPEAKER_00

I'll kick myself for your frame now if I don't know. Well he's a liar, you're always looking. So it's uh I'm I'm constantly watching.

Jeff Dziekan

And if something comes up an interested person. Yes. Is there something in your dad's collection that you want?

SPEAKER_00

Is he listening?

Jeff Dziekan

Probably not.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Um, I I I honestly I don't know what his current collection is at.

Don Armstrong

I well, but none of us do. It's a big mystery because it's always changing. And and it's oh, I gotta sell something because I don't have any more hanger space.

SPEAKER_00

I'm sure whatever I want, he's just recently sold. That's the way it always works. And I probably would have bought it for more than he sold it, you know, but he just didn't ask.

Jeff Dziekan

You're not you're not uh first refusal.

SPEAKER_00

He should be ready. You would think it would be just the path of least resistance. He'd run it by the family. Anybody want this? I'm getting ready to sell it.

Driving A Microcar Without A Trunk

Don Armstrong

I'd let it go for the yeah, there's too many, there's too many moving parts in all of this all the time, and you know exactly what I'm talking about. Right. Yeah, right. Uh well, you know, it's great to see you, and thanks for bringing the IZA. What year is it, by the way?

SPEAKER_00

59.

Don Armstrong

59. Did they only build that one body style?

SPEAKER_00

So there was, I know there was a different model series. I think there was a 200, a 300, and then they did a an actual uh, I think a two-door. It was it was a four-seater, it was like a 600.

SPEAKER_05

Why?

SPEAKER_00

I mean probably didn't sell. When you've you know when you've got that level of performance into picking up chicks, that's why they just didn't.

Don Armstrong

Does the wife say I am not getting in that thing? Or does she does she ever ride with you?

SPEAKER_00

Mostly it's just difficult to get two people into it.

Don Armstrong

Well, there's that. Yeah. Yeah, it it'll bar barely squeeze too. Kitting a men's high canonic.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, if it's if it's really dark and no one's out, she'll she'll ride with me in it.

SPEAKER_04

So is it actually four wheels or three? It is four.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, a lot of people think the back two, for whatever reason, are just closer together. I don't know what the thought process was. Well, it's a it's a solid, it's a solid Apple drive. So I don't know.

Jeff Dziekan

It's like a half shaft type.

SPEAKER_00

I it literally looks like a golf cart.

Jeff Dziekan

Oh wow.

SPEAKER_00

Little, you know, not that those are a transmission, but yeah, a little transaction kind of thing. How fast will the joke is I've had it up to 70, but the trailer started to wobble a little, so it's good, yeah. But I've I've had it up to 45 driving.

Don Armstrong

That's probably all she'll go.

SPEAKER_00

I ran out of road, actually. Um, I just I don't take it on you know a lot of big roads. Sure.

Jeff Dziekan

So it was at the end of the quarter and it was the drop off.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I didn't want to have to pull the chute, so uh I had to get off the brakes. Yeah. Yeah, and it's super low maintenance. I mean, all you have to do is clean the bugs off the back window. No, that one.

Don Armstrong

Yeah, well, does it actually have the looks running into it? Does it actually you'll get that one later?

SPEAKER_03

You can explain it to me later.

Don Armstrong

Does it actually does it actually have room for a quart of oil in it?

SPEAKER_00

Uh I bet it doesn't take a full quartz. No, but it not doesn't either. Yeah. Not a one. Check it very often. Well, I check under it, that's how I know if it's not leaking. Yeah. Does it leak? Yeah, as long as it's leaking, I know I'm good. How many gallons are we? When there's no leaking, I go, I must need oil. I gotta put some in it. Yeah.

Jeff Dziekan

How big is it, gas tank?

SPEAKER_00

Uh I bet it is less than two gallons. Really? No room for what they think.

Jeff Dziekan

What can you imagine? We got trouble.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's a bilge pump.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

They asked me if the wiper actually was electric. I said, oh yeah, it's electric, but it goes, you know, about that fast. So I'm not sure. Is it really electric?

Don Armstrong

Because usually vacuum operated.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I don't know that I would want to be stuck in the thing. It's not very watertight.

Daily Driver Raptor And Hennessey Talk

Don Armstrong

I'm thinking tub and LS in it. So what are you bringing to the next tailpipes and tacos?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, that's a good question. Um if it's if it's not something new, what is it? What are these quarterly now? Uh how much time do we have? Something up like six months or so. I think the FJ. I think it's time to bring the FJ back out. I think you're right. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Whatever the lenders is what he's saying. Whatever's not repo. Um, whatever will start, um whichever battery is the most charged.

Don Armstrong

So you don't have somebody like a George taking care of your collection.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I do not.

Don Armstrong

What is your driver?

SPEAKER_00

Uh I have a uh a Ford F-150 uh Raptor. Gotcha. It's kind of my data. It's a pretty cool truck, yeah. Absolutely. Yeah, it was uh it was a it's a Hennessy. Oh a Hennessy? Yeah, but it was it's a 21, so it's there early. Well, but it was there early. Now they're doing a thousand work. I do, I know John very well.

Don Armstrong

And um is his business still thriving out there?

SPEAKER_00

I think more than ever. Yeah. Yeah. I believe his son-in-law is the one that's that's taking the reins. So is the drag strip right? I mean, they're selling more cars and in what's that?

Don Armstrong

Is the drag strip still there?

SPEAKER_00

No, I think he sold that.

Don Armstrong

But it's still there. I don't think so. No? They ripped up the drag strip.

SPEAKER_00

I believe so. You can catch me lying on that.

Jeff Dziekan

We'll have to check, we'll look into that. We'll get our crack staff out of the street.

SPEAKER_00

And they're building a new a new facility just behind that existing property. It's kind of the state of the art uh that is well I think it's I think it's really for the for the F5, for the manufacturer high-end sports car, their performance cars. Super cars, I guess. Supercar, hypercar, right. The Venom, what is it, F5 Venom, I think is that sounds right. Yeah. And so I think they're kind of building a home for that. Yeah. Because that's that's still got a lot of traction.

Don Armstrong

You know, that was the that was the drag strip that nobody ever heard of. And it sat out there forever, nobody ever promoted it. Nothing. And it what a great location in my mind, right there on the Katie Freeway, but nope.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. You know, he started at West Houston Airport. I did not know that. He had a hanger over there. Yeah, that was a long time building the original Viking.

Jeff Dziekan

That was a long time ago, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Now you're making me old. Um, and uh he used to he used to pay to do passes on the runway to test the cars.

Don Armstrong

To that jerk that owns it.

SPEAKER_00

Uh uh, no comment. Woody. Okay, well, you know, we we land a helicopter out there.

Don Armstrong

He hates helicopters.

SPEAKER_00

He doesn't like helicopters.

Don Armstrong

No, he hates helicopters. And he gets all bent out of shape. And you never know what kind of mood he's gonna be in when you run into him out there. Oh, hey, how you doing? All right. Anyway, um when I was working for your dad, I had a little run-in on behalf of her father. I've heard stories. Yes. Anyway, uh Peter, it's great to see you.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you.

Don Armstrong

Yeah, I thought you wrote it on real big.

Jeff Dziekan

He spelled it right, too.

Don Armstrong

Yeah, that but um so well, I guess we'll see you next time. Yeah. Hope so. I would I would with FJ.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. I'll bring the FJ out. It's it's it's well sorted.

Don Armstrong

It's I know somebody that had one, sold it, and regrets it to this day.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, a guy across the street from me, he did he sold it, and I was griping at him because he didn't take it's a forerunner. I know, but it's just it's very unique. And and he's never regrets it.

SPEAKER_00

Well, not mine is uh is a 76. Yeah, okay. Even better. Yeah, right. It but it it looks you know factory new, except for it's got every accessory possibly.

Jeff Dziekan

If you need to bring more out, Mike can drive a couple over for you. Okay, don't let Mike drive.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, do you guys uh long drive? It'd be something with air conditioning.

Jeff Dziekan

Yeah, and a and a smooth road.

Don Armstrong

There's that from now on.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, it's maybe maybe ABS. I have I have locked the brakes up on the FJ a couple of times. Oh boy.

SPEAKER_03

That's Peter, it's great to talk to you.

For all these years, why do you have to have the minivan look like a traditional minivan? You don't, and they've proved it in this one. This vehicle was introduced in 2022. I think this is the first one that I've had. Uh, exterior features include a minivan that looks like an SUV, sliding passenger doors. Love it. Upright attractive. Grill and headlight. What I liked about it, overall it gets high marks in design and execution. What could use improvement? Well, they could get rid of those funky wheels. I said that. Sorry. Interior highlights, mini van roominess with second row captain's chairs. I would imagine that you could probably get a bench back there, but why? Unless you've got an uh entire school that you're hauling around. Um fold in the floor, third row seating. That was good. That was handy. It's got a dial shifter located on the center console. I love those. Uh ten-foot wide dual-purpose screen inside up on the dash. Exaggerating, obviously, but uh the thing goes the whole length of the of the dash. Um cargo room, massive, especially with the seats down. What I liked, the Swiss Army knife mindset in this vehicle. We could use improvement again, second row bench option. Um you could haul the entire soccer team with that. But here's the interesting thing it has a 1.6 liter gasoline turbo hybrid power plant. 242 horsepower, which is a lot. Uh 271 pound feet of torque. It had plenty of pocket speed, automatic transmission, but it is front-wheel drive only. Mileage, 34 city, 31 highway for combined to 32, 30.6 miles per gallon over 420 miles. Ain't bad, McGee. What I liked, the mileage with the horsepower. We could use improvement, nothing. Riding handling, smooth. What else can I say? It handles it handles great. Okay, so here there's a pricing. Base trim price,$53,099. Price as tested with all the acutram,$57,865. It's not bad. The base price on this vehicle. Yeah, there you go. Like you. Good for you. Uh base model price,$41,390.

Jeff Dziekan

That's within range.

Don Armstrong

That's entry level. Yeah.$41,000. I'm all into that. So uh competitors at that entry level price include, but not limited, the Chrysler Pacifica starts at$44,445. The Honda Iodysy starts at$42,795. Siena starts at$40,000. So you can see kind of why these things are so popular because let's face it, I mean, the average price of a vehicle these days,$50, that falls well below it,$10,000 below it. I really do like this vehicle. And if you're in the market for a minivan slash SUV, uh, I would definitely go down to your Kia dealer and take a look at it. Get a test drive.
