What Makes A Car Worth Staring At For A Week?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Step onto the show floor at the 43rd Houston Auto Show and you’ll find a surprise: a show within the show. We sit down with curator Ben Miller, the connector who rebuilds a forty-car classic lineup every year from scratch—mixing concours-grade muscle, JDM unicorns, and offbeat imports to keep the display fresh, diverse, and unforgettable.
Ben shares how he scouts “undercover” at Autorama, Texas Elite, and Cars and Coffee meetups, building trust with owners and tracking evolving builds so repeat participants never bring the same car twice. He explains why auctions aren’t ideal for sourcing, how community ties matter more than bidding paddles, and how small, local shows can yield the most surprising finds. Along the way, we talk selection philosophy—choosing cars people love, not just cars he loves—and the importance of mixing eras, body styles, and stories to spark conversation across generations.
Highlights include a 2021 Ford GT and a rare new GTD holding court in the lobby, plus a time-capsule 1999 Viper ACR with 1,500 miles parked beside a heavily modified 2014 Viper sporting twin nitrous bottles. Ben pulls back the curtain on the logistics few see: cold-weather tire limits that can delay deliveries from Canada, owner schedules, security, and the paperwork that keeps everything moving. It’s a candid look at how a regional auto show becomes a living museum—one that changes every year to surprise even lifelong car people.
If you love classic cars, JDM legends, and the craft of curation, this one’s for you. Subscribe, share with a fellow enthusiast, and leave a review telling us which car you’d add to next year’s lineup.

Live From The Houston Auto Show
SPEAKER_04Welcome to another In Wheel Time podcast. And from the 43rd annual Houston Auto Show at NRT Center, welcome to the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show. Just ahead, we've got Ben Miller going to talk about classic cars that are also on display here. You don't want to miss that. It's an extra treat for those that are looking at the new cars. Gotta have some classics in here. Gotta be able to say, oh, they don't do that anymore, but I like that. They brought us in.
SPEAKER_02We're kind of classic. Yeah. Wait a minute, antique. I meant to say antique. Antique, yeah, well. Classic. Yeah, anything to do with it.
SPEAKER_04Anything age related. Classic. Mars. Would you consider yourself classic?
SPEAKER_03Uh I have for several years now. Classic. I'm classy. Classic.
SPEAKER_04I would I would think I would think aged out would probably be more appropriate, but that's just me saying that. Not vintage. What?
SPEAKER_00Vintage?
SPEAKER_04Vintage, they're not going to be able to do that. Well that's you can you can say that about him. Yeah, any of those things.
SPEAKER_02Vintage. You like a fine wine, Michael.
SPEAKER_04So Ben Miller is with us and uh he is typically charged with uh supplying, if you will, uh some classic cars here to the show. How many you normally supply?
SPEAKER_00Normally now about 40.
SPEAKER_0440 cars. So how are you a member of a club? Well we've talked to you before.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's been on the air with us before.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And you you're you're this is a f you did it with your family at one point, didn't you?
SPEAKER_00No, so uh there's another guy that used to do it and he passed away, and so that's whenever I stepped in. And I think I think it's been nine years now. Yeah. It's it's been a while. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I could tell by the gray hair. Yeah, that's it.
SPEAKER_00So how do you get to know all of these people? Well, some of them I've already known before, whenever I showed at Autorama and doing the car shows, you know.
Building A Network Of Owners
SPEAKER_04No, wait a minute, you showed at Autorama. You mean what? Your cars?
SPEAKER_00Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_00I showed I showed 10 years straight. I never took a break.
SPEAKER_04And what and what did you show?
SPEAKER_00We've had different different cars in there. It wasn't always the same. So we showed our 69 GT350, uh 71 Boss 351, uh 70 Boss 302, um, our Terlingua. We had a uh 55 Ford custom line.
SPEAKER_04You're a Ford guy.
SPEAKER_00Seems to be a theme there.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_00I I have had other cars, but the the Fords we've got. You're a Ford guy.
SPEAKER_04Well, that's okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You've had them out on like the concourse out front at one PL.
SPEAKER_04So how do you how did you connect with these guys? You didn't call me and ask me to put my uh you know, 2001 Corvette with 35,000 miles on, although it could easily go in.
SPEAKER_00I I didn't see you at a car show, so is that how you is that how you gather these people? Yeah, you either either I already know them and I know what they have, I try to remember the cars that they have, and sometimes they get new ones, they buy it.
SPEAKER_04He's one of those young guys that has a memory. Yeah.
What Gets Chosen And Why
SPEAKER_00He's one of those. I try to. Yeah. Yeah. Um, but either I either know them or if they've shown with me, like there's a few guys that have already shown with me a few years now, and so they just bring I I have I find out what they have, and then So it's not the same car.
SPEAKER_02No, no, it might be the same person, but not the same car. Right.
SPEAKER_04So these guys are really into classic cars and they I'm tired of this one, I'll get another one. One of those. Do they go to auctions?
SPEAKER_00They either go to auctions or they buy them from other individuals or they build something new? Exactly. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So they're they're connected, in other words, to the classic car group.
SPEAKER_00Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_04And it is a group. Um because, you know, there are the late model guys, a few. And late models, I'm talking about like something like I have. To me, that's a late model, the 2001. Although it's 25 years old, and I could get the antique license plate now. Not that I want one, nor would I get one.
SPEAKER_02It would be apropos, wouldn't it? He put it in his pocket. I didn't say it.
SPEAKER_04I know. Thought it, but I didn't say it. Okay, so how how does it work that they that they get the inbound? Hey, it's been uh, you know, uh I met you at a car show this past summer. Remember me? Oh yeah. Well, um, you know, I supply cars for uh Houston Auto Show in in January, typically.
SPEAKER_02And other events, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And other, well, it mainly this one. And um would you be interested in showing your car? Putting it uh in in inside of an enclosed building for a week?
SPEAKER_00That's that's what I usually do, is that whenever I go to a show, I either find the owner or try to find them, or if I don't, then I'll just drop my card in their car. The only issue with that is if I drop your car my card in your car, some people think that I'm trying to buy their car, and that's not I just want them to show it.
SPEAKER_03So they're not gonna call you because they don't want to deal with you.
SPEAKER_00That's a marketing problem.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Well, that's why he wants to talk to them. I mean, somebody that's the last resort by dropping the card. Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so what are the what is the criteria that you use for this?
JDM, Trucks, And Rare Imports
SPEAKER_00I don't really have a criteria. You know, before the the cars that were picked were there wasn't really anything outside of the 60s. You know, there weren't any uh JDM cars, there weren't any trucks or anything like that. So what I try to find is stuff, some stuff that I like, but I try to find stuff that other people like too.
SPEAKER_04It's not just uh So do you have some JDM cars?
SPEAKER_00Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_04You do?
SPEAKER_00What do you give me a I have a Skyline over there, uh GTR, and then uh there's a guy that's shown with me before, he's got a really rare uh Mitsubishi, uh Mitsubishi uh Evo, and he just had it shipped over from the Philippines, and then uh there's an Accord D- Was it a right hand drive? Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_04All type drive hand, yes, all right hand drive.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then the other one's an Accord type R. Um, but he's shown with me before he had a Lancia uh that was like a uh uh I think I think it came from Australia or something like that. It was a few years ago, and then he had a Ford Escort, but it was from like uh England.
SPEAKER_04Where do you where do you because you know the car shows that I go to, I never see those cars. Where do you find those cars? So Do they show them or what car shows you go to?
SPEAKER_00They um so I have a buddy of mine that goes to Cars and Coffee up in Cyprus, so they'll they'll show up there, and sometimes I go with them, it just depends on what I'm doing because you know this this isn't my only job, so no. I wish it was. Yeah, we all do, yeah. I have have other stuff to do. You gotta make some money. There you go.
SPEAKER_04Um well I find that interesting because obviously we have a Saturday morning show, and a lot of these cars and coffee shows are on Saturday mornings. And for me to go to Cyprus on a Saturday morning, that's a haul for me.
SPEAKER_00It's a haul for me because I live in Kema. So we you know if I ride with my buddy completely on the other side of the world. We gotta we gotta wake up early and we're we're up there. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So and that one in Cyprus, where where is that? Where is that show?
SPEAKER_00It's it's over by like town lake. It's not in town, it's at a it's actually at a church. Um really?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think it's a Grace full grace church, Grace Church up there?
SPEAKER_00I don't remember that. Who runs that? He doesn't go to that church. Uh Jeff Ellis runs it. Okay and uh he's a he's a really good guy, he's a friend of ours.
SPEAKER_03So but isn't there one down in in your area, Kima area as well?
SPEAKER_00They or there used to be at the Home Depot or something.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's a weird one.
Hunting At Cars And Coffee
SPEAKER_00Well they they have um a car cruise that happens uh on Saturday nights at the at the Lowe's, and that one it's it's it's all right, and then there's another one that's supposed to be going on at Boomer Jack's. Uh but it's a good one.
SPEAKER_02I see that on my on my uh my hit as well.
SPEAKER_00But I I haven't really been to that one.
SPEAKER_02But we we occasionally have gone to car shows, like on a Sunday or a Friday evening or something like that. And to me, it's the same people, there's no new blood, or there's it's the same cars and things of that nature. So, hey, how you doing, Bob, how you doing, Mike? And you move on. So But lately, my my impression is if it's not a big show or a a show that's got a sponsorship, there's really not any way to go. I mean, it doesn't do anything for me.
SPEAKER_04So you get to pick and choose all of the cream of the crop from across the city throughout the year. You say, hey, would you be interested? And then they all come together here. So this is a show within a show, really.
SPEAKER_00Pretty much. Yeah. I mean, I I go to Autorama, I go to Texas Elite, I go to all the big shows, and then I try to go to all the smaller shows to to see if there's anything else that makes sense.
SPEAKER_04Do they let you in for free?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_04They don't let you in for free because they don't know who you are.
SPEAKER_00I I'm undercover, so undercover. I don't I don't go with my shirt on, I don't, you know, I I I just I just like it. He puts a wig on and big sunglasses.
SPEAKER_03That really makes sense because I whenever I used to to do some freelance work and I went, same thing. I go to some of the shows that were similar, and people figured out who I was, you know, and who I was working for. And hey, come here, let me show you my truck. You want to I want to see you need to put my truck in your magazine. Yeah. And it got to the point where to stop. You know, you you and I can see why so that's why I think going undercover is probably the right thing to do because you put a stop to that.
SPEAKER_00Some sometimes I want to go in and look at what I want to look at and then and then leave. Yeah. And make judgment later.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Cool. Yeah, that makes sense.
The Show-Within-A-Show Concept
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I I I'm with you. I mean, I I like going to car shows, but I've been to thousands. And after you've been to as many as I've been through, you know, unless it's something that really stands out, you know, somebody that brings a car like uh uh Texas Ironworks or something like somebody that really brings a a different kind of car that was just built or something special, yeah. They all kind of go together, you know? Yeah. Uh and that that's not a put down by any stretch of the imagination to any of the car shows. Because they all have something to do. Yeah, there's a need in in each one of them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So can you can you imagine though going around picking 40 a year that you didn't have last year? It's a new 40 every year. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And actually, before the boat show came in, whenever we were all under one roof, I I had to find 60.
SPEAKER_04Just go out in the parking lot. Hey man, how about that uh how about that 98 uh Buick uh estate wagon?
SPEAKER_02I was just about to say I've got a Buick, be glad to show it for you. Yeah, well that yeah.
SPEAKER_04What year is it? Uh 24. Oh, it's a 24 model. Yeah, no, we're not interested. So do you have a name for your company?
SPEAKER_00I just I just work for the auto show. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Do you do you have a website?
SPEAKER_00It's all through the auto show. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Do they do they put your cars on the auto show on the auto show website?
SPEAKER_00I think they do. They they put some of the the pictures of the sections, you know, but uh usually if someone what what I've had in the past is if someone wants to show something and they they they haven't seen me somewhere or something, then they'll actually uh send like an inquiry through the auto show and then I'll get it.
SPEAKER_02Oh it's passing along, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So so your other cars? His personal cars? Yeah, yeah. Is that just something down in Kima that you just do in your spare time? Uh I guess what I'm trying to figure out, what do you do besides the car show? The auto show. Oh, we deal with real estate.
SPEAKER_00He's a real estate mogul. Don't tell him. No, my my dad, it it's a family business. My dad and my uncle and and my grandpa, even before that, they've they've dealt a lot with uh rent houses and everything. So I've stepped in and I have my own stuff.
SPEAKER_04He's part of the Wine Garden family Houston way back when he just changed his name to Miller, just I think.
SPEAKER_03Just so he could he could be out of his own. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04All right, so what do you got? What do you got? What do you got over there that uh besides what you've already spoken about, that that really you think is is worthy of me coming to the show and seeing?
SPEAKER_00So I would say the first thing, um, because that's the first thing you're gonna see, is in the lobby. I've got a collector in the rotenda, he brought a uh 21 Ford GT, uh 2021, and then there's a brand new GTD out there, and there's not very many GTDs that have been released. I I thought Ford might have one, but they they don't have one over there, so I've I was able to have uh the collector bring it. So, and and he just got it December 2nd. There's cars, uh there's a few that are supposed to come to the Houston area. They're built up in Canada where the GTs are built, and um they can't ship it right now because it's too cold. Wow, it's too cold to ship for the for the the tires that are on the cars?
SPEAKER_02That's uh the Z-rated tires because we did that with Goodyear. Goodyear had to pull some out. Don't drive your car below 40 degrees because your tires will crack.
SPEAKER_00So the cars are hand built up at Multi Matic in Canada, and they cannot let it the car is ready to go and they can't release it. Right.
SPEAKER_02So when you're here and you've got all the cars displayed, do the owners show up or are they like absent?
SPEAKER_00So I was talking about that with another uh owner the other day, and so basically I I have I have some people there from Matagorda that they brought their uh uh land cruiser, and it's beautiful, it's over there in the corner. Um so they actually made a week out of it where they're staying up at Houston.
SPEAKER_04Did you buy them some tickets to get in?
SPEAKER_00I I took care of them. Okay. So so they've been here every day, and they feel like this is kind of like their vacation, you know. So I have people like that, and then I have I was telling them about a guy, I had a guy that had like a 68 uh Mercedes 280 SL convertible probably five years ago, something like that. And I met him at Kills and Wheels, and he brought the car, and uh so he came, dropped it off, and I said, Okay, well I'll see you sometime during the week. And he said, Oh, maybe never saw him until Sunday, whenever the show came to pick it up. And the car was uh I mean it was a really expensive car.
SPEAKER_04Well, by the way, tell him that I think that Mattagorda is going to get a post off within like 25 years. Yeah, I heard that news as well. Just wanted to say that. Let's mail him a letter. Not that he gives you.
SPEAKER_03I didn't know it was missing. I didn't know either.
SPEAKER_00No, they just neither did I.
SPEAKER_02It's a long story, you gotta watch the story.
Curating Forty To Sixty Cars
SPEAKER_00So so the two cars in the in the rotunda are are awesome, those are awesome cars. Um and then over in my section, there's a lot of really good cars. But uh a buddy of mine, he brought his uh 99 ACR Viper, and it's got 1,500 miles on it.
SPEAKER_02Really? At 1,500 horsepower, probably.
SPEAKER_04It's it's all stopped, so whatever, you know, but yeah, but no, it's got all of the bells and whistles and wings and all that stuff on it. That was the that was the end of the run, I think the ACR was. Did you ever see that car? It it looks like it it belongs on the track. It doesn't even look like it's a lot of people.
SPEAKER_02I've never driven one, but I heard stories that they're they're very powerful.
SPEAKER_04They're very stability. Just the stock one. Yeah. Because it has no traction control. There's no it's you, buddy. Yeah. And it let me tell you, I have we know a person that put it upside down, not that particular car, but put uh a Viper upside down in a ditch. And Chrysler, Dodge, had to take it back and crush it. They couldn't sell it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and that was the end of it in the press league.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that was the end of it in the press league.
SPEAKER_03The last one I drove was up there at Chelsea at the test track. They had a place out there, and the guy before me had turned off the traction controls. Well, and I hit that first turn, and I don't recall them ever having traction control. Yeah, this one had it, because when I went around that corner, I knew it, and they told me real quick, do not turn that off. Dude, I didn't touch it.
SPEAKER_00So I've got a uh that that car that's got 1,500 miles, and then I have a 2014 viper next to it that's completely modified. It's got two nitrous models in the back.
SPEAKER_01So that's that's what it needs.
SPEAKER_04Doesn't everything need more horsepower?
SPEAKER_00I guess, yeah, it's it's it looks like it's fast.
Standouts: GTD, GT, And Vipers
SPEAKER_04I want you to stay with us. We've got to take a break. Okay. Hey, thanks for joining us today here on the Unwheel Time Car Talk Show. SPEAKER_02Where are you off to next? What other show are you doing? Only doing this one. Well, I mean, another car show, either you're gonna go and kind of recruit people.
SPEAKER_00Just whenever they start back.
SPEAKER_02During the winter, it just kind of there's a few out there, but they're the regulars. Yeah, maybe the third Saturday.
SPEAKER_04But you but since you r peruse all these shows, I would imagine that you probably go to a few other.
SPEAKER_00Next one I'll probably go to, I think, is the Corvette and Chevy Expo, like a big Chevy out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. That's coming up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's it's coming up. I I don't remember when, but that's probably the next big show. And then sometimes what happens is uh there's a show down at the pier at Pier 21, um, the Pontiac Show. Pontiac Club. And so sometimes those are actually the same weekend. So if I if I time it right, then I can go to both. I can go to one and then Well that's interesting.
SPEAKER_04I did not know that they were the one and the same. Well, they're in the same location.
SPEAKER_00It happens where if I go the same Saturday, you know, whenever everything's going, then I can otherwise I would have to go like to one Saturday and then the next one Sunday, you know.
SPEAKER_02So you mentioned is that Woody's show, the Pontiac Show?
Tires, Shipping, And Logistics
SPEAKER_03No, no, no. Woody's is later. It's the actual Pontiac Club. Okay. Uh they've been doing it for years on Pier 21. It's a great little show.
SPEAKER_00It's just like one day, I believe. Yeah, but it's uh really neat location for that show. Yeah, it's it's it that's a really cool show because uh they park them all on the pier and everything, and you can go eat a Willie G's. It's it's real, it's a real relaxed show.
SPEAKER_03So we do you go to Meek'em's to look for stuff?
SPEAKER_00No, because everybody's selling well anytime anyone has anything for sale, you know, what I always tell them is you check back with me whenever we get closer to the show because I don't even you you may not even have this, you know. Right, yeah, and the problem with Meek'em is I would stick around and talk to people, but you have no idea where those cars are gonna go. I haven't been up there, no. Um I I go to Pate, uh Swap Meet, you know, I go with my dad just kind of as a we've been going to the street.
SPEAKER_03It's a big place, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Big event. Um they don't really have any, you know, cars like that that you would have to do.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because it'd be the same thing.
SPEAKER_00They go the soap crowd. You know, these are all for sale. And and there's cars that I would like to have here, but uh like if I go to Autorama or the Texas Elite Show, but they're from Louisiana or they're from Denton or you know, and I don't I mean it'd be cool if someone would Mars, you know you know who you need to introduce him to, your friend over in Louisiana.
SPEAKER_04Jim.
SPEAKER_03Jim, I was thinking of this. He he's got two more cars and he's got a buddy that's got a T Bird collection in a warehouse in Lake Charles.
Do Owners Stay With Their Cars
SPEAKER_04We actually when one of the last times that we were at Autorama, we had him display his car in our booth. That thing was outstanding.
SPEAKER_03I think it went first in the first in his class.
SPEAKER_04First in his class. It was it was magnificent, and he did all the work on it himself. I mean it was truly, and it was all stock, if I'm not mistaken. But it was a hot rod from 69.
SPEAKER_03It's like a 63 Belvedere, the big block and the cross rams and all that stuff.
SPEAKER_04It was, and it got lots of looks and won won the class. But that'd be a guy.
SPEAKER_03He's a great guy to work with.
SPEAKER_04He would come over here and show them.
SPEAKER_00Enjoy the show and talk about it. Yeah, and and some some guys, you know, you you think that they would want to do it. And I I know a few that have a bunch of cars and they they don't they don't even they just want to go drive them. Right. That's okay too. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Jim drives he is, but he also likes showing them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'd definitely like to talk to him.
SPEAKER_04So yeah, you yeah, they'll be somebody that he would you two would connect. And uh just a great guy. Older guy. Is there you think like sign waivers here?
SPEAKER_03You know, so he's considerably older. And that car, now that think about it, he won some awards at the Mopar Nationals, same year that he was in our booth at Autorama.
SPEAKER_00Yes, there there is a form. Uh so whenever whenever I talk to them, I sometimes I don't have them right off right offhand, but um, there's a form that they just have to fill out and it just has their their normal information.
SPEAKER_04So cool. Well, Ben, it's great to talk to you. Great to see you again.
SPEAKER_00Great to see y'all.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'm sorry we missed you last year, I think. But uh it's okay.
