Classic Cars: A Conversation with Circle C Classics
Ready to embark on a thrilling ride through the world of classic cars ?
Hold on as we bring you a conversation with Leon and Debbie Couch, owners of Circle C Classics in Caldwell, Texas. These are not your average car enthusiasts. From their distinct watermelon-themed Classic Chevy truck to their stunning collection of restored and modified vehicles, Leon and Debbie have carved out a unique space in the classic car scene. They also give us an insider's view of their display at the O'Reilly's Auto Parts Autorama where they promote their vacation rentals and event venue built around their growing car museum.
The journey doesn't stop there. The Couches steer us through the mesmerizing world of car clubs and the rising trend of "man bun drivers." We then shift gears to the high-speed drama of the F1 scene where we scrutinize the ongoing legal tussle between General Motors, Andretti, and F1 over profit distribution. Curious about how this legal dispute could change the face of car racing? You'll definitely want to tune in.
We wrap up with a discussion of the current state of F1 racing and its potential future. From the controversy around the Las Vegas F1 race to the logistical hurdles of the upcoming Abu Dhabi race, we look at several aspects. We also discuss the possible involvement of Andretti in F1 and the success of the Circuit of the Americas in Texas.

It is the in wheel time car talk show coming to you live today from the 63rd annual O'Reilly's auto parts auto Ram at the George R Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston, texas. That's downtown baby. Thank you for being with us. We have a couple of guests to go to join us here in a moment and I think that you're really gonna enjoy them looking at the brochure with some of the cars that they have, and they've got Display here as well. Howdy, along with Mike out of this world. Mars, who's back over there behind the camera. King Conrad DeLong we always need more. Jeff Zekin, also joining us today. Or the rare weekend appearance as our chief engineer and bottle washer. Ladies and gentlemen, david Ainsley is here too, and these poor people that have been subjected to us For the past few minutes two and a half hours they're gonna go.
Speaker 1:What are?
Speaker 3:we doing? What have we decided to do? We're gonna sit and talk to these goopers.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it's Leon and Debbie couch couch. Is it couch, the couch the couch people? We have both of those microphones. David, oh, this is some sort of a new thing that Mars you didn't flip the switch. Look at him. There we go, they okay. Now Let me hear you talk to me, debbie. Hello hello he's. So Mr Morris does these things. He goes out and buys, buys new stuff, he's, he is addicted to buying, buying anything, wires and switches and yeah cords, cables.
Speaker 1:You ought to see the thing that we have to. We bring all this stuff so we can get on the air. Anyway, I don't want to bog us down with all of this.
Speaker 4:Well, my husband may want to know where he could buy one of those where he can turn me off.
Speaker 1:Well, there it is right, there it's this little thing right here at which is new. See it says on and off. Good luck on hooking that up but it's a bazillion dollars. It is a bazillion. It's something that he found on the internet. So Leon and Debbie couch own circle C Classics. Yes so tell us about circle C, Classics. I would imagine the C stands for couch. Imagine me being smart and all Anyway. And you guys are up in.
Speaker 3:That's an imaginary smart Don.
Speaker 1:And on my part that's. There's no doubt about that. You guys are up in Caldwell, texas. I've heard a Caldwell. Didn't know where it was, but I found out just a moment ago before we went on the air. The Caldwell is up by Brian College station. Yeah, how'd you wind up out there?
Speaker 2:I'm a custom homebuilder in the Brian College station. Hi, yeah.
Speaker 1:So that Obviously has fed into this fetish about cars. Yes, yeah, so do you do all these restorations and modifications and we try to get a pretty lot pretty clean you buy them clean. Yeah, so you got you a collection going on here and he's also got a pretty nice display and this looks like it's in some sort of a warehouse. It's a commercial building on the highway. Commercial building on the highway. Take that microphone and run it a little bit closer to your mouth. Be the sports broadcaster that you've always wanted to be.
Speaker 4:And, and I'll jump in here. Yes a custom homebuilder. This is not just a building. I was thinking a custom building he designed it, built it and we are constantly adding decor in it the cars, the gas pump.
Speaker 1:So you guys would get right, right along with Mike Mars, who goes out and buys all this stuff all the time, always adding to the stuff that we're trailering around. That's correct.
Speaker 4:I had to buy a wagon yesterday there you go All right.
Speaker 1:So Don't you have a display here? Yes, and the display is for the cars, or is it for to sell Vacation rentals, or what is it? I Haven't seen the display so I don't know.
Speaker 4:It's all meant to be tied together all together Okay circle C Classics is to compliment the circle C vacation rentals and the circle C barn venue. If a bride comes in wants to book with us, we have an assortment of trucks and cars that she can have her picture made in got, it can be in front of the venue. So when we came across the homegrown sweet and juicy watermelon truck, we knew she'd be perfect for our Did you hear that?
Speaker 5:Yeah, mike's got it on the camera right now and the intake or the cover for the engine is a water, is a watermelon, yeah.
Speaker 1:I can't see it, but he can see it back there. So yes, I'm seeing a picture of it on here. Interesting truck, so where did you buy that? Is that a Ford? Is that a Chevy? It's a Chevy.
Speaker 4:It's a Chevy.
Speaker 1:Well, 57 5 5. I was in the right era decade, yeah, and did you buy it like that? That is great.
Speaker 4:Wow, a local collector or Showroom there had it. And when we walked in and saw her, I mean it was love at first sight.
Speaker 1:Absolutely Listen. You can't go wrong with a watermelon. It's even got a nice watermelon on the door. Do y'all grow watermelons up there? No, sir, no well, I had to ask you know you seedless or unseedless.
Speaker 3:Well, hempstead's not too far away. We had a.
Speaker 1:we had a truck that crashed here in the Houston area out in all three weeks ago or so like that, and it was a watermelon truck coming up 59, 69 Southwest freeway and busted open the whole 18 wheeler and watermelons were everywhere.
Speaker 5:Thank goodness you weren't a part of that, I'm glad to say so in a few months we're gonna have watermelon seeds on the feeder rope.
Speaker 1:Oh well, I'm thinking that they were if they were seeded watermelons, I would imagine that in the springtime they're gonna be a blooming and then producing watermelons right there where you hit that sign.
Speaker 2:Well, the watermelon truck was in the hempstead watermelon show.
Speaker 1:This instead truck in the watermelon show in hempstead. Yes, got it, okay, so you do show these. You take it around, obviously here, great. So what? What drew have you shown here before this first time? First time? Aren't you glad you got to meet us? Yes, he's going. Oh good, god, get us out of here. Right now Is that watermelon truck, the only one that's down there in the in the display?
Speaker 2:We're in a group of about five other trucks, the vintage.
Speaker 5:Chevrolet. You might showing them right now.
Speaker 1:Oh, I see, so this is a vintage Chevrolet Truck group. Yes, a truck. Are you a member of that group or they just invited you in because the truck looks a good? We are a member, their members.
Speaker 4:That might be why they accepted us as a member.
Speaker 1:Because of that truck, because I noticed that that seems to be a theme here in the brochure. A lot of trucks yes, of course it goes hand in hand with that, there where you live especially, and you've also got a John Deere in here, and I'll bet you that that looks like a fake, some sort of fake longhorn. You got back there behind it.
Speaker 2:We do have real long horns, and that is a fake one, and we have a lot of this is easier to take pictures with because it doesn't move around.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and then we have.
Speaker 2:Probably five or six John Deere display tractors. Yeah, like this.
Speaker 1:So there's a friend of ours that owns a place called the hemi hideout and he obviously is a big mopar fan cars like this one here that's in our display this year and John, if he feels an urge to collect something, like he has a collection of motorcycles, he also has a collection of, obviously, cars, mopars. He also has a collection of John Deere tractors.
Speaker 3:Oh yeah.
Speaker 1:Ah, the wheel type, he's also got the track type vehicles from.
Speaker 3:John Deere Steel wheels and stuff. I mean he collects some of the real old stuff.
Speaker 2:I've got a couple of the steel wheels to you, yeah pretty, pretty cool, pretty cool collection.
Speaker 1:You would. You would do well to visit his location called the hemi hideout in brookshire, brookshire, texas.
Speaker 3:Yeah, and so is this is this facility that you have there is. Do you use that? You'd mentioned brides getting their pictures. Is that a wedding venue facility? Is that one of the things you do with?
Speaker 4:it. It's across the street. We have 26 acres where this building is located, along with the venue and vacation rentals, and the brides love it, but the grooms really like it.
Speaker 1:I'm sure cars. So now are you guys from Caldwell, from Brian, call the station. Brian call the station. And how far is Caldwell from Brian?
Speaker 2:call the station 20 minutes, 20 miles 20 miles, something like that.
Speaker 1:It's good. And and, obviously, how long have you owned that property up there?
Speaker 4:Well, we started with the vacation rentals about six years ago, okay, then added the venue three years ago, then added this this year. So this is a brand new venture for us and we're very excited about it.
Speaker 3:So do the cars Pretty much the same cars all the time. You kind of add to them, or do you sell and and resell cars that you're bringing, bringing in and out?
Speaker 1:we rotate a few Not appetizers, a dealer on just more of an individual, but I don't like to get the collector and Enthusiast because you got to be an enthusiast to collect these, oh yeah, and obviously you're schooled in in what somebody knows how to work on them, because you can't own those kind of cars Without somebody having to put their hands on them and keep them up. Great, he knows somebody, they know somebody, I assume, in the area.
Speaker 2:Yes, yeah who would that be? Just a local friend, a local friend, yeah he's not gonna give you his name, don.
Speaker 3:Oh, I got that. I clearly have that there's a fan of the old school bill, so I'm an old school bill, you know and the other thing that draws my eye is the Cushman motorcycle.
Speaker 1:Correct, you don't see too many Cushmans anymore.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I picked that one up in Tennessee about a couple months ago.
Speaker 1:Really 53 a 1953 Cushman, is it an Eagle? Yes, look at me Cushman lucky. How do you? It's the only model you know. How does Don Armstrong know about Cushman Eagles? Well, it tells you how old I am, huh.
Speaker 3:I didn't say it. I know you did. I get in trouble when I say that.
Speaker 1:And on the back of your brochure. There's a pretty bright there standing in front of a Model A. Is that a wagon? What is that? What is she standing in front?
Speaker 4:It's a delivery truck A delivery truck.
Speaker 2:yeah, that's a 29 hoster.
Speaker 1:A 29. Yes, yeah, very nice. And a Circle C barn. Is that where the cars are? Is that the venue, the wedding venue?
Speaker 4:That is the wedding venue, Okay the cars are next door.
Speaker 1:Do you ever do parties at the Circle C barn?
Speaker 4:We do parties, events, weddings.
Speaker 3:Anybody wants to pay. You got space to rent.
Speaker 4:We do.
Speaker 1:And you oversee that and he just kind of looks on. Is that how that works?
Speaker 4:Well, we work them together.
Speaker 1:They do.
Speaker 4:We're hands on.
Speaker 1:Gotcha. So you take off from work on Friday to go help her get ready on the weekend at the venue. Well, this is my full-time job now. Is it? Should we not build in homes anymore, just for?
Speaker 2:us. I got six more in the making right now for vacation rentals coming up Just doing just our personal stuff.
Speaker 1:Do we have a picture of the vacation In?
Speaker 3:the Caldwell area or up in College Station.
Speaker 2:Most of our stuff is in Caldwell now.
Speaker 1:This is really cool.
Speaker 4:Yeah, that's one of the houses and all of these he has built.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, are they all the? Are you going to build them all the same?
Speaker 2:No, they're all different. We've got I've got 15 of them right now, so we're shooting to get 26. I'm trying to sleep 100 people. Once I sleep 100 people, then I'll probably slow down, yeah.
Speaker 4:They're all a different thing, like there's a John.
Speaker 1:Deere, are you the decorator? We both, both of you we both do.
Speaker 5:So do you do like wedding showers and things as well, because I'm thinking if you got a delivery van, you might want to have the expected mother in front of that delivery van.
Speaker 4:We've had baby showers.
Speaker 5:There you go.
Speaker 4:We've had all different kinds.
Speaker 1:Do you have anybody from Houston? Go up there and rent.
Speaker 4:Actually, most of our brides are Houston brides because of the lodging and we do weekend weddings. Oh my God, they come in on Friday and leave Sunday.
Speaker 1:So they all come in on Friday, yeah, and we have the wedding and the party and everything right there.
Speaker 4:Right there.
Speaker 1:That is so cool. You know, my oldest daughter got married a little over a year ago and have a grandson now and this is really cool. It's just far enough out of town. So it really kind of says do I really want to go? Yes, I want to go because it's close enough. Yes, yeah, so well, it's great to have you guys here. Classic cars, trucks, memorabilia, and with Circle C classics, and then we have the Circle C barn venue and then you've also got the vacation rentals all in one convenient location.
Speaker 2:That is correct.
Speaker 1:So what? You have a special caterer out there, or do you work with several? How does that work?
Speaker 4:There's several local vendors there that we work with.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so if you want you know you want barbecue you do that. Or if we want to have a steak a steak dinner. You can do that.
Speaker 4:Mexican any, anything, anything yeah.
Speaker 1:Have you had any Chinese Chinese food on a Saturday night? I mean, I don't know, it's the thought.
Speaker 4:Not yet, but Brian College Station I'm sure has someone that'll come to Caldwell.
Speaker 1:Well, it's great to talk to you guys. And yeah, do you have a Circle C display here?
Speaker 4:No, you've got the truck here. Just the watermelon truck, just the watermelon truck. We are here with the car club.
Speaker 1:And you're passing out brochures.
Speaker 4:Yes.
Speaker 1:Love it. Well, good, Well, it's good to meet you guys and thank you so much for stopping by Well thank you for having me Be sure to stop by and see the watermelon truck.
Speaker 4:And come see us in Caldwell, come see us.
Speaker 1:Come see us. Come see us and save. There you go. So Leon and Debbie Couch, with Circle C classics and all the other things that they've got going out out there in Caldwell Texas, we'll do that. Thank you all again.
Speaker 2:Appreciate you.
Speaker 3:Appreciate you Okay.
Speaker 1:Thanks, Yep, you know I'm still missing. I'm still missing this one thing that I think that we need to get in, don't we? Don't we have a? Sorry, I passed it up and I've written it down three or four times to try to get it in. Oh, it's the car clinic.
Speaker 3:We already did it.
Speaker 1:We already did it, did we yeah, oh, have we done it all.
Speaker 3:See, it was 20 minutes ago. Don already forgot.
Speaker 1:Let me tell you something. This is the fourth hour, so you can't blame me for anything anymore. I've been up since midnight. Have you been up since midnight? You know why I was up at midnight? Why, thinking about this today, thinking about this show.
Speaker 3:What are we going to do with this extra hour?
Speaker 1:Well, now we've only got 15 minutes left, hey you know what I'm thinking about, that what?
Speaker 5:is it F1? And ready he is, he's going to be going to court over it. General Motors and Andretti are gonna take F1 to court. F1 is actually on the New York American stock exchange, so he's got an in with the legal ease. General Motors got big money and I. I think they're gonna go to court and it's gonna be fun to watch.
Speaker 3:No, they're gonna let him in. They want to let him in, but they want the drama no they don't want the drama because you got total wolf.
Speaker 5:who's in charge of the Mercedes side of it?
Speaker 1:He's just a knucklehead, he is, he's you know, I have a feeling that you have another word for him. Yeah, I do, I do, but you put your being.
Speaker 5:And also a person named Christian Horner is also on his side too. That's the Red Bull. Yeah, so they're, they're. They're the ones they're making the stink about it.
Speaker 6:Well, what? What?
Speaker 5:it's a boy's club issue that the issue is they don't want to give them the portion another Cut of the pie, because the ten of them they get divided by.
Speaker 1:so why don't they go to formula one and have them Recalculate the pot?
Speaker 5:They don't want to. Formula one doesn't want. Now, sulamon, who is the head of F1, has no problem with it.
Speaker 1:It's the independent owners of the teams that and it's the independent owners of the teams that really run F1, because if it weren't for them.
Speaker 5:If you look at some kind of, if you read some of the articles and the blogs that are out there, it is a boys club, that's all it is.
Speaker 1:It's a every racing Organization is that yeah, this one's this one's to the max.
Speaker 5:And you know talking to my kids cuz my kids watch formula one Jason and Laura do. They say that it's the young person sport. Now, well, it's because it's all the millennials. So you got man bun drivers and their fanny packs and all that stuff. Man bun drivers.
Speaker 1:And bun driver that a new class just coined it. I like it. A man bun driver, mars. I think that you, you be the poster child for the man bun driver. Okay, a man bun driver, that's a race car driver that has a man bun. Cool.
Speaker 5:He's anyway stick on the court and I'm gonna, I'm gonna love it, and they think that and ready.
Speaker 3:There's a. Lewis has a man bun. They don't think.
Speaker 5:And ready's got the smarts to do it To oh, that's really that I know.
Speaker 3:But here.
Speaker 5:I've got something here I just want to. Now you're talking about all these F1 managers and team owners. They only have that as their, as their backup and ready Operations is building a new facility. It's gonna house their Indy car, their formula E, their IMSA, their extreme E and the Indy and X T Along with F1. So they're building the drag racing in this, that they're building the facility for that, and it's in Fishers. Indiana is where it's down the street from Indianapolis, basically. So, yeah, yeah. So they think that he's not smart enough to do it, but he's got all of this other Incredible a lot of money, yeah, and he's got that Electric go-kart track out there and Katie that's well, that's.
Speaker 3:Under his name, but it's just a name thing?
Speaker 5:It's not. He doesn't show up in driver.
Speaker 3:No, no, no, but I'm. He's making money yeah the name. I think, I think Andretti would be a good name for F1 because you know, you got to remember, mario Drove F1 back in the 80s.
Speaker 5:Mario wanted twice.
Speaker 3:Yeah, so no reason not to include Andretti in the in the in the F1 series.
Speaker 6:Other than just.
Speaker 3:I will get man buns.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah, man, I will tell you this that Larry, who spent 11 days out in Las Vegas, told me, told us and told the world that F1 royally screwed the pooch when it came to the people of Las Vegas.
Speaker 3:Take that total was because it was all about them stealing the money, taking the money.
Speaker 5:They just gonna be another three that they said by Christmas time they should have it all cleaned up, maybe All the roads back, that's.
Speaker 1:And that's a little bit too disruptive. Yep, you know, I remember not that long ago we had an Indy car race here and they held it basically in the parking lot of the Astridot Mm-hmm.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, we it went fine.
Speaker 1:Yeah yeah. It ended Frank Kitties crash. It entered here career there because of a horrible crash of the last lap.
Speaker 3:But he went up and hit the crossover bridge. Lucky nobody else got hurt.
Speaker 1:I know it was really bad, but I will tell you that if they could put it in a parking lot, why, why would you do it anywhere else?
Speaker 3:Well, I went to the last Las Vegas Formula 1 race. Angie and I went in 82 when they were in Caesar's Palin, the Caesars Palace parking lot, and Work worked fine there. I don't know why they had to do it on the streets, but I guess that's, that's fine.
Speaker 2:Get more spectators in your money.
Speaker 3:The money, money money money, money, money, money.
Speaker 5:Anyways, that's still update.
Speaker 1:Well, thank you for that. Where are your boys still in bed? They are on their way.
Speaker 2:They are on the way, yeah ding, ding, ding yeah they heard the show and they saw no G and they said we got to come and they saw, saw me, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:So there's, there's, there's that.
Speaker 2:Mr Zeekin, we have a question from the audience.
Speaker 5:Something. There is a contract with it, but I think, with the city council and all the powers that be, they're probably gonna try to negotiate out of that Because it was a mess. It was a very big mess. Everybody, all the hype and everything and you look at the pretty pictures and how the cars are going down the road and all that good stuff, it pops up, well, behind the story lost money, ruined a lot of properties, really made the community mad and nobody wants to go out there and it's gonna go the way of the Texas A&M kid coach.
Speaker 3:They're gonna pay him a hundred million dollars.
Speaker 5:I don't know if it's gonna be like that it's they'll, they'll, they'll get out of it somehow, but Jimbo it's a mess and what other places that you can enjoy the race, correct.
Speaker 1:And then we've heard that time and time again and, as I explained, you know on a road course like that, you can't. What are you gonna see? This much, you know, depending. Yeah, and you know they've got a beautiful facility here in the state of Texas circuit of the Americas and they did a great job out there with Formula One. Why not have two races out there if that's what they're looking for? I don't understand. There's so many road courses.
Speaker 3:I think the Miami race is a mess as well.
Speaker 1:There are so many nice, really cool road courses across the United States, why put it on a city street and disrupt the entire?
Speaker 5:channel. To top it off after that race, their next race after Vegas is in Abu. Dhabi. It's an 8,000 mile plane trip. You gotta get gas on the way. They gotta load up all that equipment and move all that stuff over to Abu Dhabi and practice and all that good stuff. The Las Vegas practices were at two o'clock in the morning.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 5:You know when they hit the manhole cover and ruin the car, you know he got fine for that. The driver got fine for that and lost points.
Speaker 3:Because you hit a manhole cover.
Speaker 5:Because the track was not prepared properly, but he should have avoided it. I don't know the details of that, but he got fined and yeah, he got in trouble for it.
Speaker 3:They should have welded it down. That's what they do whenever the president comes in. You weld it, I'll bet you.
Speaker 5:But nevertheless they lost money.
Speaker 3:They're in another country now and I think the race is on tomorrow they're escaping this weekend?
Speaker 1:Yeah this weekend. Yeah, tomorrow, just sometime this weekend. Well, mr Mars, it's been a pleasure. We've seemed to have pulled off another nice it's been great.
Speaker 5:I think we're gonna go to broadcast. Nice work, Michael. Great job, buddy.
Speaker 2:If we had two more hours, but we don't Well we could probably stretch it if you want to. I gotta go make a pit stop and find some food too.
Speaker 1:Well, I think that that's coming along, conrad, I guess we'll see you back in the sugar shack next weekend. Yes, sir.
Speaker 3:No, we're gonna be on Coast Auto Shield.
Speaker 1:Yes, we're going to be at the car social At the Gulf Coast Auto.
Speaker 3:Shield and we invite everybody to join us there. We'll be socially late. Yeah, yeah, we're gonna be there.
Speaker 1:And if you haven't figured that out yet, where we are, there's a commercial coming up and it'll tell you and you'll also look it up online, gulfcoastautoshieldcom, and you'll find that venue is going to be over there on the West Sam Houston Tollway, just south of 59, the Southwest Freeway. We've got that coming up and then after that I guess that we're going to pause and go back to the sugar shack until January Probably through the holiday. Yeah and we'll be at Houston Auto Show.
Speaker 2:I assume, yes, yes, we've got confirmation on that In real time Christmas party. The last Saturday of January we'll be broadcasting from there.
Speaker 1:Okay, well, we always look forward to that. That's the new car show here in Houston that's gonna be out at NRG Center Auto Boat of Auto, boat of show. That's right. I'm sorry I can't.
Speaker 2:I can't do it, just no. Can't do auto Boat of show.
Speaker 1:Don't no. All right, and Mr Ainsley, thank you very much.
Speaker 3:Thank you.
Speaker 1:David, it's always a pleasure to have you there, okay quick break now.
